June  2009

Greetings Church Family & Friends,

I am often asked about the relationship that exists between our church and Play & Learn Preschool. So here is a little background information and an update about our school that I hope you will find interesting and informative.

For two years (1974-1976) the YMCA Tot Time Nursery School was operating at Forest Park Church. The teacher/director was Ruth Budic, a member of FPC (Forest Park Church). Due to lack of support and equipment from the YMCA to run this program coupled with the transfer of the YMCA’s administrator to a different position, the future of the nursery school was uncertain. Interest was expressed by Britannica Preschools to use our church facility for one of their preschools. Progress was being made and equipment was sent to operate the preschool, but due to a financial setback and overextension of Britannica’s operation in Illinois, the school never opened. However, the church did purchase the equipment from Britannica Preschools for $800.

With this series of events, Ruth Budic and Rev. Ned Benson began to discuss the possibility of continuing a nursery center owned and operated by FPC. The Tot Time program had an enrollment of 18 children. The advantages of the church owning and operating the school were given as follows: “increased return from the school to more adequately offset the cost of maintenance/upkeep, significantly better quality in the program offered, state licensing of the school, and a more integral tie between the school and the community/educational ministry of Forest Park Church.”

In 1976 Play & Learn Nursery Center, Inc.(the legal title of the school), was formed as a non-profit, non-stock corporation, wholly owned by Forest Park Presbyterian Church, Inc. Play and Learn contributes 15% of their year’s tuition to

the church as well as shares in other operational costs associated with the school. Play & Learn Preschool directors: Ruth Budic 1976 – Oct. 1995  (19 years)….Gwen Mastoris  10/1995  - 10/2000  (5 years)…. Betsy Lubeley 10/2000 – 2004/05  (5 years)….  Betsy Lubeley & Kay Von Rueden co-directors 2005 – 2008/09  (4 years).

Many of our church members have enrolled their children in our Play & Learn Preschool. Several church members have taught in the past, and two of the present school staff are Forest Park members.  Due to the quality and dedication of our school’s directors and teachers over the years, our school has an excellent reputation in the community.

A year ago, a group made up of representatives from the session, the Play & Learn Preschool board, and Play & Learn parents was formed to explore options for the school’s future in response to the decline in student enrollment over the past few years.

The members of this group believe that to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children have unique opportunities to develop to their fullest potential – in a loving, caring environment which emphasizes Christian values is an important mission of Forest Park Presbyterian Church.  It is our hope that the preschool will continue to thrive. The task group is seeking to determine the existing child care needs in our community, if  those needs are now being met, and if they aren’t, what would be involved for us to providing additional child care services to meet those needs.

We anticipate that more parents will need care for their children that exceeds what we are currently providing. The Play & Learn Preschool year ends May 22 (approx. 3 weeks before the public schools). Our school is closed during the summer and when the public schools are closed for holidays.  When we are closed, where do the children go if both parents are employed outside of their homes and do not have relatives to provide child care?    While we meet the needs of some families, we suspect there will be a growing number of families that will require extended child care.  This is what the task group is looking into.  We’ll keep you posted.

With you in ministry and mission,

Rev. Roger

The first Sunday of this month is Trinity Sunday.  Since November of last year our Sundays have revolved around the major festivals of the church year:  Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost.  How should we view this Sunday which begins the second half of the church year variously called the seasons of Trinity, Pentecost, or in our practice, “ordinary time”?  Philip Pfatteicher suggests that this Sunday is “best understood not as the feast of a doctrine, but as the celebration of the richness of the being of God . . . and the occasion of a thankful review of the now completed mystery of salvation, which is the work of the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit.”  The Festival of the Holy Trinity is not new to the church—it began in the tenth century.  The Trinity is also confessed in the creeds, and on Trinity Sunday this year we will be using the hymn “We All Believe in One True God” (TPH#137) in place of the spoken Apostles’ Creed.  Both the text and tune of this hymn date from medieval times, but were adapted into a more complete creedal statement at the time of the Reformation, and ultimately took the place of the Latin Credo of the mass. The tune of the hymn, “Wir Glauben All’ an Einen Gott,” will also be highlighted in the June 7th service with a J. S. Bach setting for organ and violin.

Defibrillator Project

Donations for the heart defibrillator have been very generous and we are nearly at our goal of $1500.  On 5-17-2009, the Session gave the go-ahead to purchase the defibrillator.  Once it is here, we will set up orienting sessions for all those interested and we hope that the ushers and Deacons will be our contact persons if an emergency arises.

Thanks to everyone, who have been so helpful.  We can achieve any goal with God’s help!

Be a Hero and Save a Life

on July 8th

Be a hero and save a life on July 8th at Forest Park Presbyterian by signing up for an appointment with Life Line Screening. Life Line Screening is the nation’s leading provider of community health screenings for stroke and vascular disease. We all know someone who has been affected by an aortic aneurysm, stroke, diabetes, vascular disease or osteoporosis. Now is your chance to be proactive about your health care and stop the silent killers dead in their tracks by being tested.

Life Line’s inexpensive, non-invasive, and painless ultrasound tests can make you aware of undetected health problems so you can follow up with your personal physician to get the care you need. You may be wondering why you can’t just go to your Doctor to have these tests if they are so important. Unfortunately, most of the time Doctors cannot order these tests unless you have had a symptom. The problem is most stroke and aneurysm victims have no warning signs. Sign up for your appointment at Forest Park Presbyterian by calling 1-800-324-1851; mention source code: HSC6509. Tests cost as little as $50 and a complete package is only $149.00. Call and save a life today, it could be yours.

Forest Park Presbyterian CHURCH will be hosting Life Line Screening on July 8th.

Four different health screenings will be offered for people 40-years-old and older.  The screenings are performed using Doppler color flow ultrasound systems and include the following:

1)     A Carotid Artery Screening –visualizes the build up of plaque in the carotid arteries, which leads to stroke.  (Most strokes are linked to carotid artery blockage);

2)     An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) test – looks for an enlargement in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a ruptured aortic artery.  The vast majority of people who have an aneurysm have no symptoms;

3)     An Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) – screens for peripheral arterial disease in the lower extremities, which is closely linked to coronary artery disease.

4)     And a test for Atrial Fibrillation, which tests for a dangerous type of irregular heart beat.

You must pre-register by calling 1-800-324-1851.  These screenings are completely painless, non-invasive, and require ten minutes or less each to complete.  Watch for more information in upcoming bulletins or call 1-800-324-1851. Please reference this code when calling: HSC-6509.

MEN Ready to Sing!

Calling all Forest Park men who like to sing.  Here’s your chance to sing in a choir. It is a great tradition here at Forest Park, and we will look forward to presenting John Shepherd’s “Jesus is Love With Us” on Father’s Day, June 21. This Sunday is also marked as Men of the Church, so we will look forward to hearing from them!   We will have a brief rehearsal after the Sunday service on June 14.

WOMEN Ready to Sing!

Continuing our tradition here of having a women’s choir sing during one of the summer services, this year’s summer women’s choir will sing Gerhard Schroth’s “A Song of Praise” on July 26.  There will be a brief rehearsal of this choir on Sunday, July 19. We hope to see many of our choir members joining us on that Sunday, and it is an especially nice opportunity for those who are not in the choir to participate in the Sunday morning service in this way.

SUMMER SUNDAYS AND MUSIC

If you play a musical instrument or would like to sing this summer, please let our Music Director, Roger Meyer, know as soon as possible.  With the choir off for the summer, we still like to have special music during these summer months.

  • Every participating family/household that selects a pose for the directory will receive a free directory and a complimentary 8 x 10 Custom Natural Portrait.
  • You will come to the church only once for the photography and for portrait viewing.
  • The program is available at no cost to the church budget.
  • You will have the opportunity to order additional portraits during your scheduled appointment time.
  • If you wish to purchase extras, the portraits come with a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee.

It’s time to be thinking about our mission project of assisting children who have a parent in prison to experience summer camp.  Money we raise will go toward providing a bus for the week the older children attend camp and to help with some of the cost for our campers.  We also would like to fill a backpack for our campers.  Backpacks will be available at the table in the narthex on June 7th (there will be a card attached to each backpack that lists the items to purchase for the backpacks).

The camp director, Judy Lybeck, from Kenwood United Methodist Church in Milwaukee, will be here to answer questions about the Rising Sun Camp on June 7th after church.  See you on the 7th of June.
