I am often asked about the relationship that exists between our church and Play & Learn Preschool. So here is a little background information and an update about our school that I hope you will find interesting and informative.

A year ago, a group made up of representatives from the session, the Play & Learn Preschool board, and Play & Learn parents was formed to explore options for the school’s future in response to the decline in student enrollment over the past few years.
The members of this group believe that to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children have unique opportunities to develop to their fullest potential – in a loving, caring environment which emphasizes Christian values is an important mission of Forest Park Presbyterian Church. It is our hope that the preschool will continue to thrive. The task group is seeking to determine the existing child care needs in our community, if those needs are now being met, and if they aren’t, what would be involved for us to providing additional child care services to meet those needs.
We anticipate that more parents will need care for their children that exceeds what we are currently providing. The Play & Learn Preschool year ends May 22 (approx. 3 weeks before the public schools). Our school is closed during the summer and when the public schools are closed for holidays. When we are closed, where do the children go if both parents are employed outside of their homes and do not have relatives to provide child care? While we meet the needs of some families, we suspect there will be a growing number of families that will require extended child care. This is what the task group is looking into. We’ll keep you posted.
With you in ministry and mission,
Rev. Roger
The first
Sunday of this month is Trinity Sunday.
Since November of last year our Sundays have revolved around the major
festivals of the church year: Christmas,
Easter, and Pentecost. How should we
view this Sunday which begins the second half of the church year variously
called the seasons of Trinity, Pentecost, or in our practice, “ordinary
time”? Philip Pfatteicher
suggests that this Sunday is “best understood not as the feast of a doctrine,
but as the celebration of the richness of the being of God . . . and the
occasion of a thankful review of the now completed mystery of salvation, which
is the work of the Father through the Son in the Holy Spirit.” The Festival of the Holy Trinity is not new
to the church—it began in the tenth century.
The Trinity is also confessed in the creeds, and on Trinity Sunday this
year we will be using the hymn “We All Believe in One True God” (TPH#137) in
place of the spoken Apostles’ Creed.
Both the text and tune of this hymn date from medieval times, but were
adapted into a more complete creedal statement at the time of the Reformation,
and ultimately took the place of the Latin Credo of the mass. The tune of the
hymn, “Wir Glauben All’ an Einen Gott,” will also be
highlighted in the June 7th service with a J. S. Bach setting for organ and
violin.

Be a Hero
on July 8th
Be a hero and save a life on July 8th at Forest Park Presbyterian by signing up for an appointment with Life Line Screening. Life Line Screening is the nation’s leading provider of community health screenings for stroke and vascular disease. We all know someone who has been affected by an aortic aneurysm, stroke, diabetes, vascular disease or osteoporosis. Now is your chance to be proactive about your health care and stop the silent killers dead in their tracks by being tested.
Life Line’s inexpensive, non-invasive, and painless
ultrasound tests can make you aware of undetected health problems so you can
follow up with your personal physician to get the care you need. You may be
wondering why you can’t just go to your Doctor to have these tests if they are
so important. Unfortunately, most of the time Doctors cannot
order these tests unless you have had a symptom. The problem is most
stroke and aneurysm victims have no warning signs. Sign up for your appointment
at Forest Park Presbyterian by calling 1-800-324-1851;
mention source code:
Four different health
screenings will be offered for people 40-years-old and older. The
screenings are performed using Doppler color flow ultrasound systems and
include the following:
1) A Carotid Artery Screening –visualizes the build
up of plaque in the carotid arteries, which leads to stroke. (Most strokes are linked to carotid artery
blockage);
2) An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) test – looks
for an enlargement in the abdominal aorta that could lead to a ruptured aortic
artery. The vast majority of people who
have an aneurysm have no symptoms;
3) An Ankle Brachial Index (
4) And a test for Atrial
Fibrillation, which tests for a dangerous type of irregular heart beat.
You must pre-register by calling 1-800-324-1851. These screenings
are completely painless, non-invasive, and require ten minutes or less
each to complete. Watch for more
information in upcoming bulletins or call 1-800-324-1851. Please reference this

WOMEN Ready to Sing!
Continuing our tradition
here of having a women’s choir sing during one of the summer services, this
year’s summer women’s choir will sing Gerhard Schroth’s
“A Song of Praise” on July 26. There
will be a brief rehearsal of this choir on Sunday, July 19. We hope to see many
of our choir members joining us on that Sunday, and it is an especially nice
opportunity for those who are not in the choir to participate in the Sunday
morning service in this way.
SUMMER SUNDAYS
If you play a musical instrument or
would like to sing this summer, please let our Music Director, Roger Meyer,
know as soon as possible. With the choir
off for the summer, we still like to have special music during these summer
months.

your picture taken by the professional Photographer and meet with a Portrait
Consultant at the church. For the next
several weeks, we will be making appointments before and after services and
meetings at the church. Or you can sign

It’s time to be thinking about our mission project of assisting children who have a parent in prison to experience summer camp. Money we raise will go toward providing a bus for the week the older children attend camp and to help with some of the cost for our campers. We also would like to fill a backpack for our campers. Backpacks will be available at the table in the narthex on June 7th (there will be a card attached to each backpack that lists the items to purchase for the backpacks).
